After Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said Putin is trying to sabotage the proposed 30-day ceasefire plan by setting "difficult and unacceptable conditions" Starmer said: "We can't allow President Putin to play games with [Donald] Trump's deal."
He added: "The Kremlin's complete disregard for President Trump's ceasefire proposal only serves to demonstrate that Putin is not serious about peace.
"If Russia finally comes to the table, then we must be ready to monitor a ceasefire to ensure it is a serious and enduring peace.

"If they don't, then we need to strain every sinew to ramp up economic pressure on Russia to secure an end to this war.
"My message to the Kremlin could not be clearer: stop the barbaric attacks on Ukraine, once and for all. Agree to a ceasefire now."
He spoke ahead of a video-call summit today with representatives from 25 countries to discuss forming a "coalition of the willing" to shore up peace in Ukraine.
Leaders from European countries, the EU Commission, Nato, Canada, Ukraine, Australia and New Zealand are expected to join the virtual summit. Starmer will be aided by his National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, who is held in high regard after helping to negotiate peace in Northern Ireland.
