Fugitive Portuguese banker set to apply for bail

Zainul Dawood zainul.dawood@inl.co.za THE bail hearing of a Portuguese fugitive and convicted fraudster, who was arrested in uMhlanga, is expected to continue in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court today. Joao Manuel De Oliveria Rendeiro, 69, was arrested at a guest house in uMhlanga Rocks by the SAPS on Saturday. According to the warrant of arrest and extradition order issued by the Lisbon Judicial Court in Portugal, included in the charge sheet, Rendeiro is wanted to stand trial on charges of tax fraud, money laundering and aggravated embezzlement under Portuguese criminal law. Yesterday, State advocate Deneshree Naicker said the matter was on the roll for a formal bail application.
