But defender Thomas (above, celebrating) struck in the 97th minute to make it nine wins in 10 league games under manager Frank Lampard.
The centre-back said: "I can sniff it, I know I will get a chance, whether that is to set someone up or get a shot myself.
"The ball was knocked down on the edge of the box and then it was just bobbling up around by my knees, I gave it a little chop off my right knee.
"I caught it really sweetly with my left foot, and the goalkeeper had no chance, and I wheeled off with the celebrations."
He added: "We are on a really good run at the moment.
"As long as we keep grinding these wins out when we are not at our best. This is very important.
"We are just doing the same things. We seem to be gelling, but I do not know what has clicked...
