Accessing assets stored online add to grief burden

Nearly one in three cannot access key financial documents as they don’t know where they are kept or how to retrieve them, according to new research from employee benefits provider MetLife UK.
More than one in five surveyed admitted that they were unaware of what pensions, investments, insurance policies, bank accounts or debts their loved ones held.
As a result, there was a danger that valuable assets could go astray.
Many families also lack access to important online documents and passwords.
Faced with the difficult task of sorting out financial affairs, they often don’t know where to start.
More than half said they would now use a bereavement planning service to simplify the probate process.
This could include help with will writing and secure document storage to ensure easy access after death.
