Schools and youth organisations, including the Scouts and Girl Guides, can sign up to request a personal note which details wartime experiences and what victory means 80 years on.
Children will be able to write back to share their gratitude and say why the sacrifices made still matter today.
War veteran Tom Jones said: “The victory meant the world to us at the time — but the values are as relevant today as they were then.
“With fewer surviving veterans still with us, we hope VE Mail will be a major opportunity to pass the baton of memory and of meaning to the next generation.” TV star Dame Joanna Lumley, whose father served in the Second World War, backs the initiative.
The actress, inset, said: “This is simply a beautiful idea. This might be one of our last opportunities for our youngest generation to hear first-hand from surviving veterans.”
