Judges visited all the sites, from villages to cities, to rank schools, transport, broadband speeds, mobile signals, culture, green spaces and the prosperity of the high street.
With convenient commuter links to both London and Cambridge, Saffron Walden also boasts excellent state schools, a rich cultural offering and a blossoming foodie scene, according to those behind the guide.
