The flamboyant businessman and later television pundit, who handed Michael Schumacher his debut in the sport, revealed last year he was suffering with an aggressive form of bladder and prostate cancer which had spread to his spine and pelvis.
Edmund Patrick Jordan was born at the Wentworth Nursing Home in Dublin, the son of Eileen and Paddy Jordan. He took up a six-week accountancy course at the College of Commerce in Dublin, where he began work for the Bank of Ireland.
After his go-kart win, Jordan moved up to Formula Ford and then Formula Three. Failing to realise his dreams as a driver, he set up Eddie Jordan Racing in 1979 — entering teams in British F3. He achieved success in F3 and F3000 through the 1980s but by the end of the decade set his sights on F1.
After Schumacher's F1 debut at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix, the German was immediately poached by the Benetton team for the following race in Italy.
