The Nottingham Forest full-back's beloved grandfather Kelvin, to whom he says he owes his life as a footballer, died the day before he played the USA in Qatar.
He said: “It was the first game of the World Cup and my grandad who played a big part in my career passed away the day before. It was one of the toughest moments I’ve had.
“He used to take me training a lot. He used to take turns with my mum and dad to take me training four times a week.
“It wasn’t just down the road either it was an hour each way to Liverpool and he came to a lot of games and gave me advice.
So it was a tough time. The day after he passed I had one of the biggest games of my career.
“But if he'd still been here, he’d have said to me, ‘You're playing regardless of what's happened, so get out there’. That’s what I had to do.”
Coming home from the Middle East following a poor tournament for the Welsh, Williams still wanted to mark the occasion.
“I've had a ring made with grandad's name on,” he said.
