He joined the Royal Navy at 16 in 1942, a year after being rejected for being too young.
As well as Normandy, he served in the Pacific, where he witnessed Japan’s surrender at Tokyo Bay.
His son Peter said he avoided speaking of the war because of “his experience from meeting PoWs in Hokkaido and knowing their treatment”.
Last year, Norrie travelled to the Normandy landing beaches for the D-Day anniversary.
