He was rescued by best man Keith, who is also godfather to his daughter.
James had been in London in 2020 to mark the birth of a granddaughter but found he needed a triple bypass.
With that and lockdown, he was stuck in the capital for six months and medics saw his kidneys were struggling.
Keith, an Ayr GP, told him: “Don’t worry, I'll keep my kidney in my back pocket for you if you ever need it.”
At Christmas 2023 he stuck to his word and said he would be tested to see if he was a match. James later joined the 5,000 people who have received a replacement kidney from the West of Scotland Transplant Service, based at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
The milestone was marked by staff on World Kidney Day.
