Laura joins the great and good of British cycling on a ride from Manchester to Paris to show how the bike, in all its forms, has a key role in tackling the climate crisis

I’m chasing four elite athletes up Crystal Palace Hill and, between sharp gasps for breath, slightly questioning my life choices. As I round the corner I can just see Dame Sarah Storey, waiting at the top of the climb. Chris Boardman, long-distance cyclist Mark Beaumont and Olympic rowing champion Katherine Grainger are out of sight, having long ago overtaken me. This, for most of them, is the sixth day of Pedal for Paris, a 550-mile, eight-day ride designed to raise awareness of the climate crisis, and sport and active mobility’s role in tackling it. They started in Manchester, and are on their final English leg of the ride, before catching the ferry at Newhaven for Dieppe.
