Cycling right across a country gives you a unique insight into its scenery, people and culture. From remarkable to ordinary, top to bottom, one side to the other, you see it all: you actually ‘do’ the place. Anyone who’s ridden Land’s End to John O’Groats knows that. And, increasingly, adventurers are looking to do End-to-Ends abroad. So whether you want Belgium’s chips, chocolate and beer, or the quiet side-roads and tasty side-dishes of Portugal, or the stunning alpine passes and valleys of Austria, here’s your guide to bagging some international traverses…
Experience an End-to-End
01 WHICH COUNTRY? Ideally you want clear endpoints, with a sense of completeness. Plus easy transport to both ends, good roads, and interesting food, culture and scenery. Some islands already have an End-to-End tradition, such as Ireland (Mizen Head to Malin Head), Japan (Cape Sata to Cape Soya) and Sri Lanka (Dondra Head to Point Pedro). Iceland and Taiwan have established ring-road routes. For most countries it’s DIY, but look for near-End-to-Ends you can extend, such as Spain’s various Caminos or Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh Trail. 02 HOW LONG? Match the size of country to your available time. Luxembourg you could do in a day, Belgium a long weekend, Austria or Spain a fortnight. Germany or Cuba need most of a month, Japan or New Zealand maybe longer. Good luck…
