This district in the south of Spain’s north-eastern Catalonia region seems to be a rather well-kept secret, even amongst the Spanish. Tortosa, the capital city of its Baix Ebre area, sits 150km south of Barcelona on the banks of the River Ebro, nestled between two national parks with very different topographies, which makes it the perfect base for some richly varied cycling routes. Els Ports National Park takes its name from the Els Ports Massif mountain range, which includes the formidable 1,441m Mont Caro. This is a classic climb that has featured several times in the Volta a Catalunya, the men’s pro race.
