The route

Here you’ll climb out of Alpe d’Huez to the summit of Col de Sarenne (1,999m) before tackling its initially ragged switchbacks that were partly relaid for the 2013 Tour de France. The descent carries on all the way to Le Freney-d’Oisans, before a series of ups and downs, then a drop of 350m over 6km to La Garde d’Oisans, along a fantastic balcony road. The serious climbing back to Alpe d’Huez then begins, though your arrival point on the climb means you’ve bypassed the hardest part. 1 Bike shop Bike Expérience 21 is conveniently located in Bourg d’Oisans and offers Alpha road bikes for rental from 80 Euros a day. 2 Lunch stop Plenty of options in Alpe d’Huez post-ride, not least Club Med’s lunch buffet. 3 Photo op On…
