It has been an annus horribilis for pedal-powered travel. To say the cycle industry is struggling would be an understatement, with pandemic boom-and-bust compounded by geopolitical forces far outside the scope of this column. Cycling levels are down. Bright spots in cities such as Glasgow, Cardiff and Coventry were somewhat overshadowed by culture wars, stoked by a parade of frankly clueless politicians who chose disinformation over positive solutions. What a difference a few months makes. Enter a new government, and a new transport minister. Louise Haigh is the first Secretary of State I can recall who ‘gets’ cycling.
