Every year when a rider’s doing well at the Tour de France, journalists say that these performances must mean doping. But until the contrary is proved, that is not true. What I can say is that the performances are physiologically possible. Of course, there will always be athletes who will look to take shortcuts. It’s human nature. We shouldn’t just give the dopers a green light, but learn from these positive cases. And we are doing this. Take Max Hauke, an Austrian skier who was caught up in the Aderlass scandal [an investigation in Austria and Germany into doping practices carried out by German physician Mark Schmidt that centred on cycling and cross-country skiing].
