“We rode to Rome to raise awareness of dementia”

Ian Stone, 54, from Paignton, led a team of 10 from the West Country to Italy’s capital for a tough ride and great cause

“I first started doing charity rides after my mum was diagnosed with dementia in 2018. I didn’t know anything about the condition, so I wanted to raise awareness and learn more myself. I took up cycling in 2019 and – after lockdown delays – I finally did an 800-mile (1,287km), eightday ride to Spain in 2022. Three of us completed the tough but exhilarating ride, and on the ferry journey back, I suggested we ride again in 2024, but this time 1,336 miles to Rome.
