Picos de Europa

At just 40km wide and peaking at 2,650m, the compact Picos de Europa are far from Spain’s largest or highest mountains, but they’ve long been a firm favourite with walkers. As for cyclists, these northern peaks of Asturias, León and Cantabria are a regular presence on the Vuelta a España route and attract Spanish road riders in the summer, but they currently lag way behind Mallorca and Tenerife in the popularity stakes for UK cyclists. With temperatures rarely exceeding the mid-20°Cs in August and bike-friendly Brittany Ferries routes from Plymouth and Portsmouth to nearby Santander (and a lack of anti-tourism protests), that could change.
