Before smart trainers, the original Wattbike had a seismic effect on indoor training and testing

Whether your indoor training is a love, hate or grudgingly tolerated affair, there are modern tools – virtual training apps and smart trainers – to help time pass faster and to use it more effectively. For some of you, it means jumping on your Wattbike – a touchstone of modern turbo training. The roots of the Wattbike can be traced to 2000, when former world champion rower Ian Wilson founded the brand. He developed the trainer in partnership with Peter Keen, who was Chris Boardman’s coach at the time of his Barcelona Olympic triumph in 1992 and performance director of British Cycling between 1997 and 2004. The first production model arrived in 2008 at the Track Worlds and would be seen in the wild with increasing ubiquity along the way…
