An innovative London-based company have invented an ebike kit that you can swap on and off your bike(s) at will. We investigate whether it could change the landscape of ebikes forever

It’d be easy to pigeonhole the Skarper DiskDrive as just another ebike conversion kit, but having followed its progress for three years, I’ve seen it’s the first of its kind. While premium conversions from Swytch, Boost and Cytronex are more permanent, requiring switching out a wheel and adding cables, batteries and fittings, Skarper’s kit contains everything in a compact unit with a unique, patent-protected design to drive the rear wheel. The London-based start-up now have a team of more than a dozen mechanical and electronic engineers and designers working out of their Camden base. Leading development is medical doctor and inventor Dr Alastair Darwood who, at the start of the pandemic, invented one of the emergency ventilators selected by the Cabinet Office for rapid production.
