As a sports-obsessed youth, my trips to Decathlon’s enormo-stores on family summer holidays in France in the ’90s were something of a secular religious experience. It was only in 1999 that the French sports mega-retailer opened their first UK branch (in London), and there was little to measure up at home, JJB Sports being a distant second. Stepping inside these big blue behemoths, housing seemingly every type of sports equipment ever conceived, was a wide-eyed time for me. So what if I didn’t have the upper body strength to persuade my parents to buy me a javelin? It was fun to pretend that I might be the next Steve Backley for a moment.
