All three metal bikes deliver a fast ride, but it’s Rutland’s finest that takes the tape

This test is less about finding a winner than uncovering what’s possible if you ignore the hegemony of carbon fibre. In that respect, all the bikes here (despite their contrasting frame materials) impress with the kind of handling you’d expect from a race bike. Conceivably, you could turn up to your local race and compete on any of them – if you’re happy to forgo frame aerodynamics, of course. You can also build each one up in the way you want (within reason), which lends them an air of exclusivity. The aluminium Standert Kreissäge RS is the most carbon-like of the three, in that it’s the lightest and behaves with similar manners.
