WELCOMEÉ Cycling, on the road and track, was one of nine sports in the first modern Olympics of 1896 and its lofty status in the modern Games reflects that pioneering spirit. Alongside athletics and swimming, track cycling in 2024 is one of the blue ribband events, with Great Britain’s quantum leap in 2008 and beyond doing wonders to push the sport forward, at home and abroad. Elsewhere, the road races continue to grow in stature – a gold medal is a huge deal for any rider – while cross-country mountain biking and BMX offer intrigue and spectacle to fans of all pedal-powered racing.
