• The last-gasp collapse is a glorious thing to behold. I don’t say this because I am a sadist, or that I particularly enjoy the suffering of others. But I have to say, in my 21 years of covering cycling, the most meaningful moments have been those which involve a last-minute unravelling. And one rider specialises in these with greater frequency and more drama than any other: Primož Roglič. I have just finished commentating on an intriguing edition of the Dauphiné, in which Roglič was at it again. Having ridden with increasing authority as the final showdown neared, the Slovenian had built up a buffer of over a minute, with one last summit finish to negotiate before the seemingly inevitable win would come his way.
