Steaming manhole covers, fleets of yellow taxis, skytickling towers that make London feel like the civil parish of Loddon, Norfolk. New York is surely the world’s most photographed, filmed and iconic city: a metropolis that feels at once familiar and utterly extraordinary. Rarely have I imagined cycling along Seventh Avenue in midtown Manhattan, however, especially at 4:30am on a Sunday morning.
The bright lights of Broadway and Elphaba Thropp of Wicked fame will have to wait for another day, though. I have another cast of green characters to chase, namely the pre-dawn secret society of cyclists in their mandatory fluoro-lime GFNY race jerseys descending into the city’s subway stations.
