Forty-odd years ago, when they actually paid you to be a student, Interrail was a big thing. It gave a month’s unlimited travel on all Europe’s trains, with a pass costing just a few weeks’ housing benefit. (Students got that in holidays, too.) For a backpacking generation, it was their introduction to foreign travel. Interrail’s still here, and has evolved. It’s now appbased, and offers a huge range of durations, areas and days-in-a-month deals. For the cyclist cherry-picking rides here and there, it offers the chance of whizzing you and bike to and around continental Europe flight-free.
