Cartier’s Style and Heritage Director talks about the strength of its designs, the new Baignoire, and the brand’s enduring creativity

At Cartier, when a shape is chosen, it’s because we think it’s a strong design. But what is its strength? Where does it lie? There are at least two things we believe make a design strong. First, it has to be distinctive and original. It should be something that did not exist before. Secondly, it must open doors to variations, and that lies at the heart of our watch releases for 2023. The strength of our designs lies in their potential for evolution. And like evolution, when you have a child that’s a variation of the original parent idea, you still always recognise the family that it belongs to.
