Once you commit to your ascent it is important to be constantly aware of what the wind is doing on your mountain. If you started climbing in the evening you might still be experiencing a strong valley wind that is settling down. If this wind is the result of a daily cycle then it should not be of too much concern because it will die down well before sunrise. As you hike into the night you might feel strong katabatic winds blowing down the mountain. These can be especially pronounced in a long, snow-covered gully where the densest air rushes down like a river. Due to the nature of katabatic flows, it is possible that they appear to be flowing from a direction that is opposite to the wind direction forecast…
