PERFECT LANDING

Everything looks so peaceful in this grassy landing field in the northern Alps. German speakers will be happy here, as with those who love their beer. But not everything has always been so calm. Coming up for five years ago, on 12 August 2011, a tandem paraglider flew into the cables of the cablecar here, causing a major incident. The cablecar is 2,146m long, and climbs nearly 900m. It had to be stopped, stranding scores of sightseers on the mountain. Some 132 people were helicoptered down from the top station, while 30 passengers in the lower gondola had to be lowered 50m by rope.
