Trapped put Icelandic crime on the map in 2016, but it turns out another of the country’s crime dramas came first. Case, now available for UK viewers, begins with a young ballerina’s apparent suicide in Reykjavik’s National Theatre. The police investigation gradually reveals dark secrets including drugs, computer hacking and teenage sex tapes.
The show’s director, Baldvin Zophoniasson, worked on both shows, as did Steinunn Olina Thorsteinsdottir, who plays the razor-sharp detective Gabriela. “What I really liked about Case is its slower pace, and it’s much darker,” says the director. “Trapped is a more typical whodunit.”
