As communicators in public service scenarios, we tend to favor VHF and UHF gear — either analog FM or digital — and the use of repeaters to cover ranges greater than line of sight. HF operation seems to be ignored by most. As communicators who like to see just how far our signals can go, we prefer HF operation and set up antennas as big and high as possible. However, there is a way to “throw out the rules” and use HF gear for close-in work — freeing ourselves from reliance on repeaters and/or the Internet, and possibly covering an entire state with direct communications, instead of just regions.
