Sum and Difference

I have been doing a lot of work on direction-finding antennas lately, so it sure seemed like it would be a good topic for this issue. In Photo A, we have the classic ferrite rod antenna used in most AM radios, often called a wave magnet in the early days. You can use your simple AM radio for direction finding. Rotate it slowly a full turn and you will see two signal peaks and two signal nulls. The peaks are off the flat side of the rod, the nulls are off the ends. The peaks are broad, but the nulls are sharp. Those nulls are when the ends of the rods are pointing at the AM transmitter. Nice sharp nulls pointing the direction to within a few degrees, but we…
