Being committed to emergency communications is not a pursuit for every ham, but every ham should know something about it. There will be those who will take to the training, and the stress of a response, like a duck to water. Others, given their individual situations, may not be as likely to pursue this aspect of the hobby with as much effort and participation. That’s the reality of almost any opportunity that may be presented to a diverse group of people, and the community of ham radio is certainly diverse, both here and around the world. Nonetheless, governments here and in other countries look to their hams for emergency communication support. So a reasonable number of us must be willing and prepared to respond.
