JUGIONG NSW The Irish settler John Philip Sheahan put Jugiong on the map when he built the Sir George Tavern in 1856. Located on a sweeping bend of the Murrumbidgee River, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne and 120 kilometres northwest of Canberra, on the land of the Wiradjuri people, the quaint town was established as a pit stop for weary travellers, stock drovers and the occasional outlaw. The George is where they would hang their dusty hats. When the Hume Highway bypassed Jugiong in the 1990s, the Riverina village grew quiet and its landmark pub was left partly boarded up and barely operating. Fortunately, the property’s renaissance was sparked in 2015, when the mother-daughter team of Kate Hufton and Liz Prater purchased it from the Sheahan family. The duo oversaw…
