As I am handed a margarita by the magnesium pool on a sunny winter afternoon at Basq House in Byron Bay, New South Wales, I ask myself why I don’t stay at hotels more often. I’m usually more likely to book a holiday home when I go away, but Basq House has reminded me just how nice staying in a hotel really is. There’s the minibar, a freshly made bed when you return to your room and attentive staff who recommend restaurants, carry bags, make drinks and ensure you want for nothing. Having opened in June this year, Basq House is a 32-room boutique hotel in the centre of Byron but tucked away in a quiet laneway. A new build, it’s a super stylish hotel inspired by Moroccan riads.
