AN IRISH TEENAGER named Annie Moore made history on Jan. 1, 1892, as the first immigrant to be processed at Ellis Island. Over the next 62 years, more than 12 million immigrants arrived in the United States after stopping at this iconic landmark. Their stories are kept alive at Ellis Island’s National Museum of Immigration. It’s fitting that both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are accessible only by ferry—the trip echoes the classic immigrant journey. When a steamship docked in New York Harbor after its Atlantic crossing, first- and second-class passengers were given a quick inspection on board. Meanwhile, all third-class or “steerage” passengers would board a ferry to Ellis Island for the complete immigration process, which lasted three to five hours.
