WITH SAN ANTONIO behind me, I head northwest on Interstate 10 until I see a massive limestone terrace looming. This is the Balcones Escarpment and the signal I’m entering the Texas Hill Country region. Newcomers always notice the distinct change in landscape as they approach the town of Boerne (pronounced BURN-ee). Settled in the mid-1800s by German immigrants, Boerne retains a German cultural influence (seen in the street names and the home-style schnitzel and strudel). The Hill Country Mile shopping district pairs this old-world vibe with a fun mix of boutiques, galleries and eateries. Venture off Main Street and explore nature trails (some lined with wildflowers), historic homesteads and one of Texas’ most stunning (if nameless) caves.
