BACK IN THE day, when CL was still a small, family-run company with an office featuring desks made from computer boxes and old plywood, we had an annual retreat at the cottage of our founders, Al Zikovitz and Wendela Roberts. “The Cottage Life Weekend” was a two-day affair each September, often attended by upwards of 40 people. The Zikovitz-Roberts cottage, still one of my favourites that I’ve ever visited, isn’t huge. It’s similar to many other Ontario cottages, with three bedrooms, a little bathroom, and a fabulous screened porch at one end. There’s also a good-sized bunkie crammed with as many beds as possible (on that weekend, anyway). I’m not sure where we slept but, truth is, there wasn’t much sleeping on account of all the martinis.
