Revamp your drill chuck for better bit grip

OVER TIME, A well-used drill can lose its grip. For a chuck to hold bits, the three inner jaws must be able to move freely, with no rust or packed shavings getting in the way. Fully open the chuck to blow out debris, then close it to extend the jaws. Remove any rust with steel wool and lubricate the jaws with white lithium grease. Open and close the chuck several times to distribute the grease. If it’s working as it should, the jaws will meet at a point when closed. Sometimes, cleaning and lubricating the chuck is enough to realign the jaws when drill bits are spinning off-centre.
