JANUARY 1ST DIDN’T just deliver a shiny new year, polar bear swims, and hangovers. It also brought a revamped Ontario Building Code (OBC 2024), packed with more than 2,000 additions and changes—hence the noisemakers and confetti. Okay, perhaps the celebration was more muted. Despite the makeover, “We’re not going to see drastic changes to house construction,” says Mike Memme, the chair of the Ontario Home Builders Association and a Lake Erie cottager. While some code changes can increase construction costs, “from my experience so far, cost implications have been minimal.” New basements must be roughed in with an airtight membrane beneath the slab and an access pipe to make a radon extraction system easier to install if needed later.
