Experts have learned how North America’s tiny cricket frog can skitter across the surface of a lake without sinking. Using high-speed videography, researchers recorded the amphibians’ movements in a tank of water. Then they watched the recordings (slowed down to a fraction of their filming speed). It turns out that—disappointing!—these frogs actually can’t walk on water. But they can sort of…belly flop through it. Really, really fast. The cricket frogs in the study were able to perform as many as eight jumps in a row, with each complete jump cycle taking less than one second. Eight belly flops? Ow.
