OH, DEER A recent study published this spring says that climate change, not habitat alteration, could be the main cause for the decline of Canada’s threatened caribou population. At least indirectly. According to the research, milder winters mean that more white-tailed deer—they’re considered “ecosystem disruptors”—survive. They spread into caribou habitat, where they cause trouble: eating the caribou’s food, spreading disease, and drawing in wolf predators.
