Editor’s Note: An otherwordly trip, in a legendary place

THE FIRST VACATION that my husband and I took together was a five-day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park. It was September 2008, about eight months after we first met. We had both done quite a bit of canoe-tripping in our teens and 20s, a decade (or more) previous, although neither of us had been out much since. Our first leg of the journey was up Opeongo Lake, the largest in the park. It was a bluebird afternoon. The lake unfurled like a welcome mat, delivering us to the little-explored islands and forests deep in the park.
