Composite deck boards that won’t burn your feet (or paws)

IT’S CALLED THE cottage ballet—if you’ve ever performed a sprightly pas de chat across a sunny deck, you know how hot some composite lumber can get. Composite lumber is a blend of wood fibres and plastic, usually HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Compared to wood or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) decking, composite absorbs and retains more heat, especially in dark colours. That’s why composite decks can be hotter to the touch in the sun and stay warm later into the evening. MoistureShield’s composite decking line includes a half-dozen boards featuring proprietary CoolDeck technology. The boards have a heat-reflecting cap that reduces heat absorption by up to 35 per cent compared to some composites—I felt a noticeable difference.
