Entre Cévennes et Camargue, Nîmes est posée comme une belle énigme. Une cité à double visage, protestante et catholique, dynastique et accueillante, incandescente et pudique. Capable de s’étourdir dans l’euphorie d’une feria ou de se replier sur le secret des demeures bâties au Siècle d’or, dans l’Écusson ou vers Feuchères. Car Nîmes, qui inventa la toile denim, fut longtemps un puissant centre textile, grâce au jean, aux soieries, aux indiennes… Si elle a perdu le fil de ce récit, elle en a noué d’autres, forte d’une inébranlable foi en elle-même: la ville, et c’est heureux, a une haute idée de sa beauté. Depuis toujours, elle sollicite les meilleurs urbanistes et architectes pour la célébrer. Le résultat est un autre paradoxe: connue comme un haut lieu de la romanité, Nîmes foisonne…
