MUSÉE Mende «Au loup! » Ce cri d’alarme fait frémir tout Lozérien qui se respecte. Dans ce pays de causses et de forêts profondes, l’un des plus sauvages de France, l’épisode de la Bête du Gévaudan, qui terrifia paysans et bergères de 1764 à 1767, appartient à la mémoire collective. Loup-garou, hyène, lion, sorcier chamane ou, plus vraisemblablement, canidé de grande taille? Sur la nature réelle de ce tueur en série, responsable d’une centaine d’attaques mortelles, la brume du mystère plane encore. Mais le mythe est si vivace, il a engendré tant de rumeurs, de battues d’arquebusiers, d’articles sensationnels, de représentations horrifiques, qu’il fallait bien lui offrir un foyer à sa mesure.
