SAFETY FEATURES & CRASH-TEST RATINGS

AS SAFETY TECHNOLOGY progresses, we’ve been evaluating some active safety features in our test program. As part of CR’s Overall Score, we give additional consideration to certain active safety features—when standard equipment on all trim levels of a model—that can help drivers avoid an accident or lessen the crash impact. In addition to crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts additional crash tests that get more difficult over time. For example, the side crash test now involves a higher speed and a heavier barrier than in prior years.
