We found the X5 to be the rare SUV that is both powerful and efficient. The six-cylinder has instantaneous response without a hint of hesitation from turbo lag, with 0-to-60-mph acceleration coming in at a thrilling 6 seconds. The eight-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly. Plus, the X5’s 23 mpg overall is tops for the class among nonhybrids. The driving experience is exemplary because the X5’s balanced suspension glides over bumps and ruts, delivering a composed ride with handling that gives drivers confidence.
