What does it do? That’s a good question. Intel Optane is a kind of non-volatile memory (or NVM). You might think it's related to NVMe, (the fastest kind of SSD) and guess it’s a storage drive. But from the word ‘memory’, you might think it was RAM. Well, you'd be in the right ball park. It’s actually a drive that was introduced to avoid delays in transferring data between storage and RAM. Why would I want it? The point of the original 16 or 32GB Optane drives (around £30-£60, pictured) was to cache data that your PC was often reading from storage to RAM – your regularly used programs and files – making a hard drive or SSD on the older SATA interface feel faster.
