Road sign warns drivers about phone use
A system that displays a roadside warning if it detects a phone being used in a passing vehicle is being tested for the first time in the UK. Norfolk County Council, which has installed the equipment on four roads, hopes it will act as a deterrent. Using a directional antenna, the detector picks up radio waves from a phone, measuring signal strength and how long the phone has been used for. It then shows a warning sign of a device with a red line through it (pictured). It won’t be able to tell whether the driver or a passenger is using the phone, nor will it record footage of vehicles, though the council said that capturing specific number plates could be a “future development”.
